Objective: To provide applied research training in pulmonary therapeutics for pharmacists interested in pursuing a career in academia, industry or at the FDA.

Location: The University of Florida sites: Pediatric Pulmonary Center and the Asthma Research Laboratory.

Faculty:

Leslie Hendeles, Pharm. D., is Professor of Pharmacy and Pediatrics, and Clinical Pharmacist in the Pediatric Pulmonary Clinic. He is interested in the delivery of inhaled medications to children and methods of improving adherence.

Terry Spencer, M.D., is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, a Pediatric Pulmonologist, and the Asthma Research Laboratory Medical Director. He is presently conducting research on the mechanisms and treatment of neutrophil-mediated lung diseases, as well as the use of brochoalveolar lavage, induced sputum and exhaled breath condensate measurements as surrogate endpoints of clinical disease and response to treatment.

 

Clinical Experience: Evaluation of therapeutic response, dosage, product and device adjustment, participation in drug selection, education of patients on all aspects of drug therapy, evaluation of treatment failures and adverse effects.

Research Experience: Priority is placed on developing skills necessary to conduct independent clinical research including: research design, protocol development, IRB, and Clinical Research Center submission, budget development, data analysis, presentations, and scientific writing. The specific fellowship activities and responsibilities will be determined on an individual basis between the fellow and program faculty.

Teaching: Participation in teaching clinical clerkship students. Didactic lectures are optional.

Coursework: Optional courses are available in pharmacokinetics, pharmacoeconomics, analytical methods, therapeutics, and biostatistics

Length: Two years

Start date: July 2007

Financial Support: $31,092/year; no state income tax

Requirements: Pharm.D., residency preferred
